Shared Services...easier said than done

Shared services is self explanatory....share the services within your organization. In reality, it is more difficulty to achieve than most think, because it requires full endorsement from the top down. Without this, their will be individual groups insisting that their needs outweigh the other, and this will risk the central tenet of shared services which is.....maximized breadth of use, and repeatability. Too often, those in charge with hand crafting local solutions for each silo will argue centralization typically for their own job security. Top executives and CEOs need to realize that this repeatability, replication and scalablity yields profits. If it cannot be quickly replicated to be re-used for any department or client then it is likely not worth the investment.

This video from Gartner illustrates the benefits and challenges of Shared Services.
