Conformity Assessment
A Conformity Assessment is a structured evaluation of whether an AI system meets specified regulatory or standards requirements. Under the EU AI Act, providers of high-risk AI systems must complete conformity assessments before placing systems on the EU market — either through internal control (self-assessment with documentation) or third-party assessment by a Notified Body (depending on the specific high-risk category). The assessment examines whether the system meets requirements for risk management, data governance, technical documentation, record-keeping, transparency, human oversight, accuracy, robustness, and cybersecurity. A successful assessment results in a EU Declaration of Conformity and CE Marking, allowing the product to be sold in the EU market. The U.S. and other jurisdictions are developing parallel assessment mechanisms. AI governance, AI compliance, and AI risk management programs targeting EU markets must build assessment-ready documentation into every high-risk AI system — making mature responsible AI infrastructure essential for global enterprise AI deployments at scale.
